An art lecturer at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa recently performed a piece titled “We Could Be Here” at an open space in Beacon Bay.

The performance included the lecturer arriving in a hospital bed with a sign that read “Stay At Home,” as a call for people to adhere to the government’s new Covid-19 regulations. The lecturer emphasized the need to learn from countries like Italy, which faced medical shortages due to the pandemic.

The performance elicited mixed reactions from passersby.

The lecturer, who specializes in ceramic sculptural installations, aims to create thought-provoking work that sparks dialogue.

He received the MEC’s Special Award in Visual Art during the Eastern Cape Cultural Awards function in 2022.
